Dodge Fired After the Eagles Sixth Loss

DENTON – Todd Dodge, going from unstoppable high school coach at Southlake Carroll to unwinnable college football coach at North Texas, made a quick exit last Wednesday afternoon after failing to win at least seven games as stated on his contract.

Athletic director Victor Villarreal was the one who made the announcement. “This is not based on the last seven games, This is based on a body of work over the last three and a half years, and at this point in the program, I feel like we should have been much further along,” Villarreal said.  A case could be made on whether Dodge’s firing was the right thing to do due to over seventeen injuries on the team this year and Dodge only having his fourth string quarterback to work with in the last game. In the last six games, the Eagles only lost by five points. So, potentially having four wins and being 5-2 by just a hair, and having nearly 11 very close losses over the last 3 and a half years, some people don’t place all of the blame on Dodge. How would this affect Villarreal’s decision? We may never know.

For the meantime, interim offensive coordinator Mike Canales will take over as head coach for the remaining games of the season. Canales, formerly being the offensive coordinator for South Florida for over three years and coach for the New York Jets, feels he can get the job done.

Todd Dodge still has a great future in coaching college football and according to sources has already been contacted by Division 1 schools for offensive coaching opportunities. As for now the adversity just never ends for our Mean Green Eagles.
