UNT has Mary Jane and Mean Green

by on November 1, 2010

Students from the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws marched through the campus on Monday, October 25th to begin Halloween week. You might have heard students shouting, “We mean green!” This was their attempt to promote awareness and educate the “ignorant” about the affects of marijuana.

The group NORML had about 40 students who started the march at the university union and circled the whole campus to gain the attention of other students on the way to class. Some students were handed flyers and others made loud remarks against the organization with angry fists.  The pamphlets had facts such as, “Fifteen states and the District of Columbia have laws allowing the medical use of marijuana. Another 13 states, some of those with medical marijuana laws, have decriminalized marijuana.”

Marching for such a controversial topic raises the question of “Why is alcohol is legal and why is marijuana illegal. NORML did a good job of promoting awareness on “their” views on marijuana but was it enough to change the minds of their fellow eagles and was it necessary?
